Traffic rules
Driving rules in Turkey aren’t very different from what you’re used to, but they do have some specifics❗️
✅ Stay calm, always. This is the most important rule to remember when driving in Turkey. ✅ Right of way from the right. Turkish drivers don’t usually follow this rule, so always check all directions. ✅ Pedestrian crossings. It’s not common to let pedestrians cross, even at marked crosswalks. If there’s a car behind you and you decide to stop for a pedestrian, don’t brake suddenly! There’s a good chance you’ll get rear-ended. When you do stop, turn on your hazard lights. ✅ Flashing high beams. This doesn’t mean they’re letting you pass — usually, it’s a signal telling you to give way. ✅ Intersections and roundabouts. “Main road” and “Yield” signs don’t always work here. It’s safer to slow down and make sure others are letting you through, because sometimes traffic moves opposite to what the signs say. ✅ Turn signals. Many drivers in Turkey don’t use them and may suddenly turn left from the far-right lane or vice versa. Mirrors are often ignored too. Be ready to guess the other driver’s next move — think for both of you. ✅ Traffic lights. If the light turns yellow while you’re moving at speed, don’t slam on the brakes — the driver behind you may still try to pass during the first seconds of red. Start moving only when the light turns green, so you don’t collide with those “finishing” on red. But be ready for drivers behind you to honk as soon as the light turns yellow. Just wait calmly.
